Celeste Magee was born and raised in Melbourne’s (Narrm) western suburbs. She’s had a keen interest in art since she was able to colour a colouring book and continues to develop her practice over her lifetime. Celeste began painting with acrylics and watercolour during her high school years and was introduced to oils in the early days of art school. She studied an Advance Diploma of visual art followed by a Bachelor of fine art at RMIT university. Throughout her studies she focused on painting, drawing, public art and installation. Since graduating in 2017 Celeste has continued to develop her practice in painting and drawing and has gained interest and skills in sewing, tattooing, mosaic and stained glass. Celeste has a strong interest in crossing the boundaries of these disciplines and mediums to create unique one-of-a-kind artworks and wearable pieces.
Celeste has been exhibiting in group shows around Melbourne since 2014 and has been a selected finalist for art prizes such as Blacktown Art Prize in NSW and Fortyfive Downstairs Emerging Artist Award. Celeste allows her process to bloom from the tiniest flickers of inspiration. Weather it be a dirty stove top, and overgrown garden or a stack of chairs, she spends time defining the image in her mind with extensive drawing until it develops into a composition suitable for a finished artwork. Using traditional mediums Celeste creates colourful, surreal, contemporary artworks.
